How To Beat Tharsis - Overcome The RNG [Victory]

How To Beat Tharsis And Overcome The RNG Victory

One of the most difficult turn-based strategy games made in recent times is Choice Provisions’ Tharsis. The game is unforgiving, uncompromising and unyielding when it comes to throwing tough decisions and hard challenges at the player. Well, gamers looking for some helpful tips and a strategic guide on how to overcome the RNG imbalance, there’s a walkthrough guide available.

Before starting a turn be sure to count up the dice rolls you would need to address each of the problems affecting the ship.

Because of the way the dice work it’s sometimes best to plan out at least an extra turn ahead to deal with potential hazards that might impede your progress.

Specialists are most important because they can get a re-roll. Mechanics can also use an additional point to repair a point of the ship. Captains can also recover dice for other crew mates, which is essential for high stress situations. If the captain ends up with other crew mates in the place he can refill their dice.

As the video depicts, there is some measure of luck involved with the dice roll, but a lot of it still falls to how you utilize crew mates.

In one example it’s showcased how to deal with choosing a side project. Players would have to choose to add stress to the crew or lose a dice for each teammate. In the video Freitag goes with stress because it doesn’t debilitate the crew as early on as losing a dice roll for each teammate.

Freitag also demonstrates how the assist modifier works when there is a potential critical risk in play if you roll a certain number while attempting to repair the ship. He was unfortunate enough to roll the dice number that would have taken a health point, but due to the crew member having two assists, it negated the penalty that the crew member would have suffered.

As the video showcases, it’s imperative to put spare dice in research projects after dealing with critical events because the research projects can help gain you more dice, add assists or add health points.

It’s also mentioned that it’s important to plan ahead by using micro-optimizations for some tasks, which helps with dealing with high-stress scenarios. Planning ahead with small options and uses of the dice – such as stacking assists or putting dice in research projects – can make or break your route to victory.

If you’re able to fix all the major critical damage to the ship in a turn, it’s useful to apply a specialist to the food area to add more supplies for the crew.

The video also takes time to explain how to maintain situational assessments and prioritizing addressing issues with the ship. For instance, if you have a round where there are multiple issues affecting the ship, it’s important to tackle the problems based on how effectively you’re able to repair them.

This doesn’t mean to always repair issues with lower event ratings, it means to assess whether or not you have the proper dice available to repair the event without losing a teammate or by risking supplies in an unnecessary manner.

In some events it may require multiple crew members to repair a certain section of the ship. One of the cases explained in the video details how a certain damaged area would cost a second person a health point. One of the things that Freitag does is stack the assists when there’s a free dice after repairing a block.

As for food distribution and cannibalism… it’s explained in the video that sometimes it’s best to use a cannibalism point instead of a food point in order to stave off having to use food unnecessarily.

One thing a lot of people complained about in the Steam reviews is that the game’s reliance on luck was too much and that strategy is thrown out the window, however at the 47 minute mark in the video above, we see what happens when a critical event happens and the dice roll poorly in Freitag’s favor. Essentially, there are still ways to mitigate the damage by using the research projects to stack assists, and using multiple teammates to repairing the ship.

The main lesson from the playthrough is that it’s not hard to deal with the issues if you utilize micro-solutions for future events and constantly planning for one or two steps ahead of any potential problems.
